The abortion pill is a safe and effective method of terminating an early pregnancy by thousands of women across Europe and the US. This method of terminating a pregnancy is known as a medical abortion. Medical abortion (non-surgical abortion) refers to the process of taking certain medications to end an early pregnancy without surgery. Many women opt for this method as it can be completed in private within the comfort of your own home.
What is the abortion pill?
“Abortion pill” refers to the two medications used to end a pregnancy: mifepristone and misoprostol.
How does the abortion pill work?
During a normal pregnancy, the body produces a hormone called progesterone to aid in the development and growth of the pregnancy. Mifepristone is taken to help block the body from making this hormone and therefore stopping the embryo from growing.
Misoprostol is taken to cause cramping and bleeding. These two actions empty the uterus and effectively expel the embryo and end the pregnancy.
Is the abortion pill the same as RU-486?
Sort of – RU-486 is the former name of mifepristone, the first medication you take during a medical abortion to end a pregnancy. RU-486 is now better known as “the abortion pill.”
How will the process of taking the abortion pill work?
A member of our staff will review your situation and ensure that a medical abortion procedure is right for you.
- Take Mifepristone – At the clinic, you will be given mifepristone to take and begin the process of terminating your pregnancy.
- Take Misoprostol – You will decide with your medical practitioner when to take this second pill. This can be taken right after the first pill or up to 48 hours later. This will cause heavy cramping and bleeding and other period-like symptoms.
- Clinic Follow-up – A follow-up appointment is required to determine if the procedure was successful. This final step is very important as it ensures there are no side effects or infections resulting from the procedure.
How effective is the abortion pill?
The abortion pill is 95% – 97% effective, but if it does not, there is the option of taking more medicine or having an in-clinic abortion.
What are the side effects of the pill?
Heavy cramping and bleeding can be expected after taking the second pill and are completely normal. Other side effects can include:
Most symptoms go away after a few days, but some women can experience heavy for as long as 30 days. We recommend you do not insert a tampon during this time and instead use pads.
Who can take the abortion pill?
Medical abortions can be performed during the first 10 weeks after your last menstrual period or up to 2 months after the first day of your last period. If you are more than 10 weeks pregnant, the embryo is too developed for the abortion pill to effectively work. You may want to consider surgical abortion procedures to terminate your pregnancy.
What is the cost of the abortion pill?
The cost of the abortion pill depends on many factors but our cost at Aaron’s Clinic includes:
- All office visits
